Summer Internship 2015: Marriott Hartford Downtown

This summer I had the pleasure of interning at a 4 Diamond Property in Hartford, Connecticut. I was just as nervous as I was excited about this position, as Hartford is a long way and a lot different than home for me. Upon my arrival I realized I had nothing to worry about thanks to my supervisor and Director of Human Resources Karin Ziemba and Human Resources Manager Katy Walkama. My 8 week internship would take place in the human resources department with these two women, and it proved to be a wonderful learning experience.

The best part about working with Karin and Katy was the excellent training I received and their willingness to answer any question I may have. They gave me so much background info about the property that was very helpful in human resources where you interact with every department. I helped to plan Associate Appreciation Week, where we provided everything from a snack cart (pictured above), to a sno cone machine in the cafe, or a Ben & Jerry's truck as an after lunch treat. They also allowed me to design many adverts for associate bulletin board, a task that was very enjoyable to me and really improved my skills with programs such as publisher. I designed a training course to help associates get accustomed to booking rooms with the Marriott discount. This is something human resources had been doing upon request, and teaching associates how to do it on their own would free up a lot of time for other activites. I filed associate paperwork, scanned resumes to have an electronic copy and save space, and sorted payroll for delivery to departments. I also assisted in the operation of the associate feedback surveys, where my boss had the great idea to set up a step and repeat to make the process more fun for those who took it. My last big responsibility of the summer was to set up a community service based manager activity. We chose Wheeler Clinic, and decided to stuff backpacks with school supplies for the kids in need at this location. Unfortunately I was only around long enough to the supplies come in and not the assembly itself, but it was amazing to me that the managers wanted to do something so giving for their outing.

Additional Work:

An event that occurred during this past summer is Connecticon. Similar to Comicon, this event attracts a huge audience with interest in comics, gaming, etc. Our 400+ was almost completely booked, putting high pressure on every department from housekeeping to banquets. My bosses saw this as an opportunity for me to gain experience in other areas of the hotel. For a few days of the busy weekend I worked as a houseperson delivering goods such as extra toothpaste or an air mattress to rooms with multiple guests. I also helped room attendants with turning over rooms. During this weekend I witnessed managers of the hotel stepping up to help with this process as well, which made me gain huge respect for them and their willingness to help with any aspect as needed.
