Alpha Sigma Tau: Fall 2012 through Spring 2016

Being in a social sorority has taught me a lot about working with others and how important that bond is to achieving your goals. Alpha Sigma Tau's values are active, self-reliant, and trustworthy. I believe those values translate across any enviroment, and hope to stick with them even as an alumna. Through this organization I have held the position of Director of Event Planning (Spring 2015-Fall 2015), which improved my skills in planning and organizing safe and fun events for our chapter. I also joined a family that taught me the meaning of having a support network and how that can improve your relationship with any organization.

This fraternity is new to James Madison University, and I had the pleasure joining it early on in its foundation. It is based on academic requirements of having a 3.0 overall GPA and being within the top 30% of the hospitality school. Though I do feel being in this fraternity coincides well with education, I also enjoy the social and community aspects of it. The organization participates in food drives and back pack stuffing for groups within Harrisonburg, which is a rewarding experience as a JMU student. It also helps me create ties professionally by hosting guest speakers from the hospitality industry.
After completing all credits for my Spanish minor, I wanted to find a way to continue practicing my second language. Luckily, a JMU Spanish Club had just been formed. I joined with a friend from my study abroad since, and have been using this outlet to keep fluent since. We participate in fun community events such as local cuisine or salsa dancing, but also log community service hours as well. One of my favorite experiences through the club has been volunteering at a local elementary school for their parent teacher night. Many of the students' parents don't speak English, and being able to speak in Spanish with them about their children and what they have accomplished was very fulfilling.
